‘FUN CITY’

a portrait of Demolition Derby and Speedway culture in Aotearoa, New Zealand

Family run motorsports parks will always have a place in my heart. Nothing beats the run what you brung attitude of it. Few things beat a summer evening, aluminum stands, a cold beer, and some form of motor vehicle racing on dirt. It can be as poetic or brutalist as you’d like it to be.

I live right across the freeway from Costa Mesa Speedway. During the summer I’m there any time I can. I drag friends and family, and occasionally dates who could care less along with me. And this film captures those summer nights perfectly.

Josiah Watson captures this perfectly in his piece ‘FUN CITY’. He allows the images to speak for themselves. Hearing nothing more than a sound track that aligns with the imagery and motors living their last few moments of life.
